All about Grace
Sins of the Fathers
The Beast Within
Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned
Grace is on a plane headed to India when oops transported to monster town!
Personality:
Grace is a nerd! There’s a reason why Gabriel goes to her for research on anything- she’s damn good at getting information, and she doesn’t have to resort to deception, risking injury, or committing misdemeanors to get it (unlike Gabriel). Well, okay, most of the time she doesn’t, and sometimes she just gets it into her head that she needs to climb a wall and sneak into somebody’s house. More often than not, however, Grace is level-headed, organized, and cerebral. She prefers to have a plan, typically one that’s been thought out several steps in advance, and stick to it as much as possible. She’s still fully capable of acting on the fly, though, as nothing ever seems to go as planned when she and Gabriel are on a case. She also prefers to play by the rules, as evidenced when she first arrives in GK3 and learns that Prince James has relieved her and Gabriel of their duties. She laments that they're out of a case, and expresses surprise when Gabriel insists on continuing the investigation with or without the prince's blessing.
Grace is stubborn as hell. When she gets it into her head that she is going to do something, she will try her damnedest to do it come hell or high water. The best way to piss her off is to get in her way. Gabriel learned this the hard way when he tried to keep her out of the family business. Almost the moment she received his letter about his new case in GK2, she hopped on a plane to Germany and showed up unannounced at Schloss Ritter with every intention to join the investigation. Oh, and probably kick his ass. He's lucky he wasn't there at the time.
Despite her academic background, Grace is not even remotely skeptical. She is very open to the idea of the supernatural, making her an ideal partner in the Schattenjäger business. Never once does she doubt the legitimacy of the strange things that begin happening to Gabriel in GK1, even growing concerned that he's getting into dangerous territory and warning him to dial it back ("I wish you'd tell me what's going on. I swear, you're gonna step into a hole you may never get out of."). She's also spiritual- specifically, Buddhist, and makes occasional references to karma and reincarnation. There's a scene in the second game where prays to the Shrine of Our Lady of Altötting to help her to save Gabriel, and her prayer is answered. It's confirmation that her faith is real, as is her conviction to help.
As loathe as she would be to admit it, Grace is definitely a product of her strict, traditional upbringing. Not that it's completely a bad thing- in addition to her impeccable research skills, she's also an incredibly talented painter and skilled in tai chi, both abilities that have saved her and Gabriel's lives on more than one occasion. As academically brilliant as she is, however, her social skills can be a bit lacking. When meeting and talking with strangers and acquaintances, Grace is extremely polite and professional. First impressions mean a lot to her. In GK2, she attempts to converse in German when she can, and is apologetic when native speakers respond in English to make conversations easier for her.
To keep up appearances, Grace tends to bottle up negative feelings, putting on a strained smile in public while fuming elsewhere. For example, in her first conversation with Madeline in GK3, Madeline is actually pretty rude to her, but Grace remains tactful albeit a little terse and taken aback. If the player examines Madeline after the conversation, however, Grace will straight up call her "irritating" and "bitchy" in her narration. Though she manages to keep most of the negativity to herself, there are occasions where it does come out, particularly if she's pushed too far. A good example of this is how she initially treats Gerde in GK2. At first, she's very catty towards her, but a combination of believing that the other woman has usurped her role as Gabriel's assistant, Gabriel's dismissive attitude about the whole thing, and her own frustrations about giving up school make her unable to stay civil and she eventually blows up in Gerde's face. She immediately regrets it afterwards.
Grace has a difficult time relaxing and letting loose. When Gabriel asks her if she's seen any good movies lately, she excitedly tells him about this great documentary on pyramids she watched the night before. In GK3, she has a narration that explains the various functions of SIDNEY, which she relates in an informative manner, but ends with a "pretty cool!" Around close friends like Gabriel and Mosely, she can be a little more relaxed, trading barbs and jokes. Still, even around them she remains fairly uptight, and her jokes tend to be put-downs at their expense. She will always be the designated driver. When she's forced to share a hotel room with Gabriel, she immediately assigns him to the couch.
She doesn’t like having decisions made for her, as her parents did that to her throughout her entire life, and still attempt to do throughout the rest of the series. She really resented how overprotective Gabriel was of her by trying to keep her out of future investigations, and would probably act the same way to anyone who tried to protect her when she knows full well that she can take care of herself. Her narration in GK3 makes a point of emphasizing how she brought two fingerprinting kits to Rennes-le-Château so they can both work on the case, and her tone makes it clear that she isn't about to let Gabriel try to keep her out of it.
While she herself hates being talked down to or treated like she can't do things on her own, Grace has no problem being condescending to others. Her first introduction in the entire series is flat out telling one of Gabriel's flings that she could do better than him, for example. She's very snarky towards Gabriel and casually insults him (to be fair, he kinda deserves it), but at the same time is constantly worrying about him and trying to keep him out of danger. She can still be very sarcastic about it, however ("Gabriel may be egotistical...and selfish... but he's got a good heart! ...I think."). In GK3, she has no qualms playing up ignorance and pretending to flirt to squeeze information out of John Wilkes, who was already established as someone she greatly dislikes due to his pigheadedness. Once she gets what she wants, she hightails it out of there (though not before giving him a nice beating when he tries to get fresh with her).
Even though Grace plays it safe and can come off as stuck up, she really wants to be adventurous and daring. The entire reason she goes to New Orleans in the first place is for a change of atmosphere after being cooped up in school for so long. At the end of first and second games, Grace willingly puts her academic career on hold indefinitely in order to help Gabriel, believing his role as Schattenjäger to be more important than getting a Ph.D. At the beginning of GK3, however, they've gone several years without a case and it's clear that Grace is feeling restless again. By the end of that game, she leaves Gabriel to pursue her own training as a monster hunter, something she feels is more fulfilling than digitizing the Ritter library.
